I am sure many of you are wondering why I chose to journey to Uganda and what lead me to this country specifically. Check out this blog post to learn about why I have such a huge heart and passion for this country and its people.
Two years ago, in September of 2011 at a Priscilla Shirer simulcast, I saw a video that had a significant impact on my life. The video discussed tragedies happening in Uganda and the need for missionaries in the villages of this country. After the video, women attending the conference were lead through a time of worship; looking back, I realize that this was the moment the Lord laid a very specific calling on my life and my future. While I was worshiping and singing praises to my Father, my mom -who attended the conference with me- whispered in my ear, “Someday you’re going to go over there and change the lives of those kids.” I simply dismissed her comment with a smile and thought to myself, “Ha. Yeah right, mom.”
After attending the simulcast, Uganda seemed to be a reoccurring theme in my life for the next two years. I attended a conference in Atlanta, Georgia in January of 2012 where children from a tribe in Uganda were featured in a live musical performance of ‘How Great is Our God.’ I had books recommended to me that were about Uganda, different ministries in Uganda and the need for the Love of Christ in the country of Uganda. I had countless encounters with random people at retreats, work meetings, and churches that had been to Uganda or in some way had ties to Uganda through others in their lives. I randomly walked into a church after moving to Denver that was serving Ugandan coffee to help support and raise money for missionaries serving in Uganda. Looking back, I wish I would have written down all of the times Uganda "came up" for me in the last two years.
For about the first 18 months of my Ugandan dream I spent most of my time trying to figure out what the Lord was trying to tell me through all of these divine appointments. Maybe He wanted me to sponsor a child in Uganda? Maybe He wanted me to adopt a child from there someday? Maybe He wanted me to give money to an orphanage or ministry there? For what seemed like forever, I prayed for purpose and direction over this and finally realized what the Lord wanted; He wanted me to travel to Uganda and pour out his Spirit and love on His little children.
Now two years later, here I am preparing and planning for a three month journey to Uganda. I continue to pray over this journey and do my best at being an obedient servant of His by following the calling he so vividly placed on my heart two years ago.
